editness

I have been editing professionally since 2006, and am a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association. I am also an articles editor for Strange Horizons. My résumé is on LinkedIn.

My fiction expertise is in the genres of fantasy and science-fiction. My non-fiction expertise includes history, gender & sexuality, art, and education. I keep up on the sciences as an avid amateur.

My rates are subject to change, depending on the scope and type of project. I will provide a specific estimate before generating a contract. Typical freelance editing rates can be found here. I usually work at half my rate for a new client's first project.

q & a

I just need a quick look to make sure the grammar's ok. Can you do that?
I no longer accept copyediting contracts. Please consider putting in a request for a copyeditor with the Editorial Freelancers Association.

Do you offer free sample edits?
I do not: there are too many requests. If you would like a sample edit of your work, I must ask for a small fee. The rate is $25 for a 700-1000 word sample.

How long would it take for you to edit a novel of 70-100 thousand words?
A full developmental edit of a novel takes me from four to nine months, depending on the extent of changes and number of passes.

What's your preferred stylebook?
The Chicago Manual of Style

Which programs do you use to edit?
I prefer to edit using Microsoft Word. Its Track Changes feature allows an author to see any changes I've made, and to accept or delete those changes. I am also familiar with Adobe InCopy.

Do you phone or video chat?
Yes, but only with contracted clients.
